What is a shelter in place?

A shelter in place is a procedure that is implemented when it is necessary to keep all occupants within the school building(s), or certain areas within the school building(s), to protect them from external or internal conditions including, but not limited to: an external environmental event (i.e. chemical release or incident, severe weather, etc.), or an internal event or situation (i.e. a medical emergency, large fight, etc.).  A shelter in place can be utilized to prevent the entry and exit of individuals to and from the school buildings or from preventing staff members and students from exiting individual classrooms and other areas for the purpose of keeping the hallways and other general access areas clear while a situation or event is being handled.
